Wild plot!

I don't have a garden which is one of my few present regrets. However just over a year ago I took on an allotment, a half plot, which is only a few minutes walk fom home.

I blog about Plot 124 over on Flighty’s plot where as you'll see one of the Lawn Loungers links is London Daily Nature Photo which shows photos taken about 12 miles away from where I am in Harrow.

One of the Plot People links is When to Watch Wildlife which is an informative monthly guide.

I'm happy to encourage wildlife onto the plot and have bird feeders, a logpile and a pond on it, as well as plenty of wild flowers and grasses.

Compared to many allotments it's very much a wild plot!

Well, Mr. F, you've done wonders attracting wildlife and wild flowers to your plot in such a short space of time.

I haven't seen the 'When to watch wildlife'site before - it's been an interesting read to see which wildflowers I can expect to see on the downs. I wish I was a bit more clued up on what's what though.

Glad you're still enjoying your plot...the last time I saw it you'd dug it all over and I think some vandals came and broke the fence and did some damage or something like that...are you still growing vegetables on it or are you turning it into a wild life allotment? LOL...sounds an easier option...GBHs...XX

  That was back towards the end of last year and was thankfully sorted out within a few days.
  I'm growing flowers, vegetables and soft fruit on a very informal basis, as well as encouraging wild life onto the plot.
  That makes me a non-traditional allotmenteer I guess! xx

    Nice idea though...hope it works out and you don't get a surfeit of wild life in the form of slugs and snails...LOL...GBHs...XXX

      I've actually found very few slugs and snails so far, which is rather surprising! xx

        Considering all the rain we've had, that is a surprise..LOL...hope it continues...actually not that many this year in our garden...but then not that many insects at all...GBHs..XX

I saw a wonderful picture recently, taken on the allotment of a young relative of an elderly aunt. The young relative and a friend share the allotment - somewhere in or around Edinburgh - and a fox has been visiting. The relative took a photo of her friend hand feeding the fox, much like you would with a dog. The picture, nicely mounted in a frame, sits on aunty's mantle piece. It's a talking point and of course, the cultivated allotment with fruit and veg, (not a manicured cultivation) is also well to the fore in the picture.

  Wonderful! We have foxes on the site and they are quite tame. A plot neighbour feeds one of them like that.I must try to get a photo! xx

I love the way any space can be utilised for wildlife. Even a bundle of bamboo canes can provide winter shelter for ladybirds, lacewings and solitary bees.

Our tiny plots front and back are full of nectar producers, bringing in bees and butterflies.

  I love looking at all the different insects on the plot. There's lots of ladybirds, which I think have colonised a log. Bees are always buzzing round as a plot neighbour has two hives tucked away nearby. It's great to see butterflies, even though they're mostly cabbage whites which most of the other allotmenteers, not surprisingly, curse. Cheers!
